21st – 22nd January 2012
During the Past few Weeks:
- Otto Tonges left FAWC and is heading back to Germany.
- Peter Clemence has flown to London to be with his sister who is terminally ill.

Saturday 21st :-Heather Arnold was Tuggie and tugged from mid-day to 8.00 pm, in all 18 launches. Well done Heather! Clio v Pertersdorff and Dylan Evans were the Duty Pilots and William Whittaker and Rob Tiffin the Instructors. There were five visitors including Johan Saaiman from the Howick Club. Ockert did his1000m height gain and Jac Snyman converted to his Nimbus ( ZS-TIM ) after Ian Forbes, who was a previous owner, test flew it and briefed Jac on this hot ship!
Here is Jac’s story: It took 8 months to get the paperwork in order for ZS-TIM, but worth the wait! The first flight on Saturday was like stepping into another world! Ian briefed me before the flight and then it was up to me and TIM. The conditions were perfect so it is difficult to tell what proportion of the new found performance should be attributed to the weather but I am sure the 20-odd meter wings helped! I flew around the valley (Audenberg, Jan-du Toit, Badsberg, Vic Peak) and then ventured a bit further north to the end of the Tulbagh valley along the ridge. It was a new experience for me after the Phoebus to see the landscape speed past me. I am used to a bit of a (very bumpy) snail's pace! Altogether an incredible 2h40 minutes!
Sunday 22nd:
Today was a practice day for the first formal Western Cape Regionals. Pilots from upcountry drove down to Worcester to take part. Launching was however delayed because of strong winds especially earlier in the day and our new tug pilot wisely elected to not fly MIV because of the gusty wind conditions.
Later some of the gliders were launched by Phil Surridge in the Falke. Launches were to Victoria Peak and the pilots flew wave and ridge lift for an enjoyable orientation flight. Pilots taking part in today’s flying were Oscar & Lourens Goudriaan, Mark Halliday, Gary Whitecross, Sven Olivier and Ian Forbes.
